Gear Hobbing & Shaping

Gear blanks, splines and toothed components produced on hobbing and gear shaping equipment.

Gear cutting is one of the capabilities that separates a general machine shop from a supplier who can take a complete transmission component.

We cut spur and helical gears by hobbing and internal or external gears by shaping, with the gear blank turned in-house beforehand. That single-source path means the bore, the faces and the tooth flank all come from the same datum chain.

Gear quality grade is agreed against your drawing before we quote, not assumed. If your drawing specifies a grade we cannot cut repeatably, you will hear it at quotation stage rather than at inspection.

Materials, equipment and inspection

The practical detail.

Materials for this process

Carbon and alloy steels including case-hardening grades, stainless steel, bronze and brass for worm wheels, and engineering plastics for light-duty gears.

Equipment and inspection

CNC gear hobbing and gear shaping machines, with the blank turned in the same shop. Tooth thickness, runout and bore concentricity checked before the batch is released.

Questions

What buyers ask about this process.

What information do you need to quote this?
The drawing, the material, the quantity and the date you need the parts. If a critical feature is unclear, we will ask rather than assume.
Can you work from a sample instead of a drawing?
For simple parts, usually yes. We will measure the sample, send you a drawing for approval, and machine against that.
Gear Hobbing and Shaping — what do you need to know from me?
Anything unusual about how the part is used. Function tells us where to put the effort: a worn surface matters more than a cosmetic one, and knowing that changes how we machine it.

Send us a drawing. Get an engineering answer, not a price list.

Tell us the part, the material and the quantity. An engineer reviews your drawing and replies within one working day — usually with a suggestion on how to make it cheaper.
